Forty minutes north of Ljubljana the country turns alpine. A church on an island you row to, a boardwalk pinned to the rock through Vintgar gorge, and behind the ridge Bohinj: bigger, quieter, ringed by Triglav. Most tours do Bled in a morning. The good ones keep going.

Slovenia’s other half is below the floor.
The word karst is Slovenian before it is geology, and close to half the country is riddled with it. Postojna runs a train through twenty kilometres of galleries. Predjama is a castle built into a cliff with a cave for a back door. At Škocjan a footbridge crosses a canyon so deep the river underneath is only a sound. Take a jacket; it is ten degrees down there in every season.
The river really is that colour.
Bovec sits where the Soča runs turquoise between white limestone, and the whole valley is built around getting into it: rafts, kayaks, canyons, a zipline strung across Učja. A hundred years ago this was a front line. Now it is the loudest fun in the country.
The wine never leaves the country.
Slovenia drinks almost everything it makes, which is why the amber wines of Brda and the reds out of Vipava land as a surprise. Add a market morning under Plečnik’s colonnade, štruklji at a counter, and a cellar tasting that quietly turns into lunch.
A city you can walk out of in twenty minutes.
Ljubljana is small on purpose. A green river through the middle with dragons on the bridge, a castle on the hill and a funicular that saves the climb, Plečnik’s arcades along the market, and cafe tables that stay out until the light goes. Do it on foot first. The day trips will still be there tomorrow.
Alpine, karst, or Adriatic.
Slovenia fits inside a long day’s drive and still changes completely across it. Bled for the island and the peaks behind it. Bovec for the river. Postojna for the cave. Piran for an Adriatic evening on a Venetian square.
